SQL SERVER 2012 Installation

Installing SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2:

I was asked couple of times to post on SQL Server installation. SQL Server installation is very straight forward, step by step wizard driven. SQL server can be installed directly on windows 7.  Trail software’s (Windows server and SQL Server) can be installed on any virtual machine and are good for 180 days. Please click the download site you may need to register with Microsoft. You need to download the SQL server software extract the software into a folder if it’s an image or ISO File.  For this demonstration I am installing SQL Server 2012 on the windows server 2008 R2 version.

Extract the iso/image file to a folder using winrar or winzip software.

1)     Click on setup.exe file. The step by step wizard opens. See below image.

     

2)     Select Installation on the left hand side and select New Sql server installation and add features to existing Sql server. Click Next.

3)     The installation will run the support rules select next.

4)     I am using the evaluation version. If you have the product key input your product key. Click next.

5)     Accept the software license terms and click next.

6)     The setup roles will identify any potential problems. All roles should pass. Ignore the windows Firewall alert.

7)     Select the Default option for installation. I am selecting the SQL database engine service and the BI components (Analysis, Integration and Reporting services).  Remove components related to BI if you don’t need them. Click next.

8)     Select all the instance features as shown in the image below. Click next.

9)     Setup operation will run the Pre-requisites and other needed parts. See the status and click next.

10) If this is your first installation on your machine select Default installation. Click next.

11)  Add service accounts needed for installation. Click next.

12) Select database authentication. You canadd both authentication windows and Sql.  Password complexity at least 10 characters length with Capital letter is suggested for better security. I am selecting mixed mode. Click next.

13) If you are installing SQL Server Analysis services (ssas), select the default installation.

14) I am selecting the reporting services default configuration. Install and configure in Reporting services Native mode and install only in the reporting services share point integration mode.

15) In the error reporting section by clicking the option you can automatically send information to about errors to Microsoft.  

16) Operation rules will run to check everything the needed parts and configurations to begin installation. Click next. 

17) The Installation beings and will install all the components needed as required. It runs for about 20 mins and reports any problems.

18) Installation succeeded and it might require a restart. You can browse through SQL Server 2012 under all programs and see everything is installed.

Some of the common most common problems during SQL Server Installation

• Corrupted/Missing components while extracting or downloading SQL Server ISO file
•  Missing .net framework 3.5 components,
•  User permissions and service accounts, 
• Compatibility 32 bit and 64 bit.
